JOB DESCRIPTION: Full-Time Care Center Manager – Licensed Embalmer

Classification: Exempt

Reports to: Director of Funeral Operations

 

Summary/Objective 

Our Care Center manager is responsible for the daily oversight of our central preparation facility. They plan workflow, direct priorities, and oversee the quality of embalming, decedent preparation, and transportation. Directly lead, supervise, train, and develop Embalmers, Care Center Attendants, and Transfer Team staff.  Our managers are essential for developing professional and effective staff and exceeding client-family expectations.

Primary Duties but not limited to:

 

Care Center Manager – Licensed Embalmer – Overall Responsibilities – Spring Grove Funeral Homes

 

  • Lead and develop a cooperative team environment that is respectful, communicative, accountable, and service-oriented
  • Conduct embalming, decedent preparation, and restoration with expertise and respect.
  • Monitor and assess the performance of oneself and others to make improvements or take corrective action
  • Manage assigned elements of the day-to-day operations of the Care Center
  • Coordinate staff for embalming, cremation preparation, and check-in, decedent final preparation, decedent transportation, ritual washings, and family-involved body preparation, or identification viewings as business needs warrant.
  • Participate and help plan all ongoing training and safety classes as required annually and staff meetings on a regular basis, including Hazard Communications, OSHA, Bloodborne Pathogens, and Formaldehyde Standards.

 

Care Center Manager – Licensed Embalmer – Operations – Spring Grove Funeral Homes

  • Manage the day-to-day activities ensuring on-time services, and exceeding client family expectations. Remove barriers, encourage ideas, and identify improvements. Resolve issues and concerns, providing resolution guidance and empowering accountability. Assure operating practices comply with applicable federal & state regulations and company policies.
  • Responsible for executing Care Center goals and priorities. Develop, communicate, and monitor objectives, priorities, processes, and procedures. Manage staff responsibilities, expectations, and accountabilities.
  • Responsible for ordering supplies and equipment and coordinating repairs and maintenance for existing equipment.
  • Collaborate with the funeral home leadership team for resource sharing, ideas, and business or operational enhancements. Work with others on product, process, and technology needs and improvements.
  • Helps facility manager to maintain buildings, facilities, and grounds in a clean, manicured, and working order. Ensures all safety, quality control, and compliance standards are followed.
  • Approves payroll, completes annual reviews, and is responsible for continuous training and improvement.  Hires, trains, and retains the best talent to serve families at the highest level.
  • Communicates frequently with all departments to ensure support of associate and family needs.
  • Coordinates employee, assistant, and vehicle scheduling to ensure coverage and availability at all times.

 

Care Center Manager – Licensed Embalmer – People Development – Spring Grove Funeral Homes

  • Develop a strong, trusting, and reliable team. Understand team members' career aspirations and provide assignments to develop skills and/or close gaps. Constructively address issues and provide tangible and appropriate feedback. Develop a proactive and collaborative management style to increase employee engagement and minimize turnover. 
  • Responsible for screening candidates (internal and external) and hiring or promoting skilled and effective staff. Helps to review pay, and recommends pay increases, special pay, and career advancements.
  • Discipline staff as necessary. Writes development plans to close behavior or skill gaps. Collaborates with Human Resources throughout discipline, development, and termination processes. Recommends and discusses terminations with the Leadership team.

 

Care Center Manager – Licensed Embalmer - Additional Duties – Spring Grove Funeral Homes

  • Professional and timely when dealing with complaints or dissatisfaction with services or merchandise.
  • Ability to step forward and make funeral arrangements on an exception basis if the need arises to support the team.
  • Responsible for fleet management, including transfer vans, hearses, and limos. Ensures timely preventative maintenance and upkeep, licensing renewals, insurance, vehicle monitoring system, and recommendations for capital expenditures. 
  • Maintains a positive attitude and healthy working environment through organization and communication.
  • Ability to simultaneously handle multiple projects, prioritize tasks, and make good decisions that benefit client families, the organization, and the employees.
  • Ability to empathize with client families and their guests and demonstrate tact and patience in emotionally charged situations.
  • Work to build and expand the Spring Grove brand and service awareness to support sales. Demonstrated willingness to participate in growing market share through community involvement.
  • Develop and implement plans to improve customer satisfaction index and online community reviews.
  • Other responsibilities as requested or assigned. 

 

 

INDUSTRY AND COMPANY AWARENESS          

Knowledgeable of prevailing laws, local customs, operating procedures for customary equipment, and appropriateness of religious customs.  Complete understanding of Federal Trade Commission Funeral Rule.        

SAFETY

Responsibly conduct duties with regard to the safety of client families and to the employee and staff.  Knowledgeable with O.S.H.A. funeral home requirements, local fire codes, board of embalmers rules, and statutes pertaining to safety.

SENSITIVITY

Be aware of the client's family situation and cater to their emotional needs.  Above all, provide an atmosphere of respect for privacy and reverence for the dead. 

COMMUNICATION

Good written and spoken communication skills are required.  Quality notes and communication to staff, outside vendors, and third-party employees.

Work Environment

This position operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, printers, fax machines, and cleaning supplies.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to talk and/or hear. The employee frequently is required to sit; stand; walk; squat; and reach with hands and arms. Required to lift up to 50 pounds.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time exempt position. Business days and hours of work are:

Monday through Sunday, Flexible Scheduling

Travel
Local travel may be required for support.

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Experience

  1. Five plus (5+) years of experience in a related field
  2. Two plus (2+) years of management or leadership experience, funeral profession preferred
  3. Professional interpersonal skills as well as cultural sensitivity and tactfulness to interact with a variety of cultures and language barriers
  4. Must possess or be able to reciprocate an Ohio Funeral Director’s License and Ohio Embalmer’s License
  5. Excellent customer service skills and ability to resolve issues and empower others.
  6. Professional written and oral communication and effective leadership skills
  7. Displays a “Customer First” Attitude.
